SUPPLIES FOR ENGLISH 7 CLASS
The rigors of English Language Arts require the following materials be in the classroom every day. Therefore, these materials will need to stay in the classroom and not be taken elsewhere. Students with homework can take that work home in their Homework Pocket Folder. This is a specific list based on what works best with seventh-graders who will be creating their own textbooks based on their strengths and needs versus the SOL test that will be administered in the spring. Warning! A One-inch binder will not hold all the work your student will do in class, so please send the size that is needed.
2GB USB Flash/Thumb Drive
Color and brand does not matter. If you have a gently used one or one that advertises a company, please don't buy a new one. Just send whatever you have, keeping in mind that your student is learning to be responsible. Remove any data you have on a used one before you send it to school. The drive must stay at school the whole school year and will be returned to you during the last nine weeks grading period.
If you watch the sales, you should be able to get one of these for under five dollars. If you have an old one at home, please just send it so you save some money.

1 1/2" Three-ring binder with clear-view front and spine
Color of binder does not matter. That clear plastic view cover for the front and spine are important. If you cannot find Durable grade, then economy will suffice. However, the economy binder will likely split and need replacement if your student is too rough or drops the notebook onto the floor once or twice. Please try not to buy the heavy duty grade (way too expensive)! Please remember that the 1" binders are not big enough to keep the school year's materials in! Your child will be working awfully hard this year, and the size binder is very important.
Binder Pencil Pouch
These come in many colors and styles. Just remember this pouch will ALWAYS be in your English Language Arts notebook so that you always have everything you need to complete assignments. These materials are not to be taken from the classroom to another class. That way we don't lose any time waiting for people to go to lockers or another classroom.
Loose Leaf Paper
It doesn't matter which you choose--wide rule or college rule. Choose what you are most comfortable with. One packet of 100-150 sheets is all you will need. To save money, you can insert 50 sheets that you already have at home.
Pencils (one or two 24-count boxes)
If your student is not careless, one box of pencils should be enough. If your student is one of those natural-born writers, more might be helpful. If your student likes to eat pencils or break and use them as flying projectiles, two boxes is suggested. Hopefully, negative behaviors at the expense of a pencil will not be an issue! If you don't care for Papermate, get a different brand. I chose this one because it is very cheap.
If you don't like regular pencils, please have two mechanical pencils AND LOTS OF LEAD. The .05 lead breaks easily, so consider .07 or .09 pencils/lead.
Important! If your student is caught intentionally dropping lead on the floor and then dragging it across the classroom floor so it makes a mess on the tiles, be forewarned that an office referral will be written.

Pocket Folder for Homework
Whether it is plastic or paper, this is the folder that will have your student's homework assignments in it.
8 Tab Dividers
These tab dividers will last for years. Students need a pack that has EIGHT tabs. It is virtually impossible to be a successful student without a packet of dividers. The ones at Wal-Mart have white tabs, and that's even better!
Twistable Colored Pencils
We use color more often than you'd think typical for middle school. Meaningful caveman art is key to a well-rounded education, and these twistable pencils/crayons never need to be sharpened. Students also like the fact that the length of the pencil stays the same all year long.
If you absolutely stomp your foot down and say NO, please buy regular colored pencils and a manual pencil sharpener with a shavings cover. Colored pencils cannot be sharpened in the classroom electric sharpener.
