Quia? I do not like Quia, so do not go there to see what we are doing! Use this Weebly Page! If we have email accounts, I will have part of student classwork on Moodle, but until then... Weebly is where it's at!
LearningEarnings Positive Rewards Program
For the third year running, the wonderfully amazing folks at LearningEarnings will be sending students treats for positive behavior. Students can earn up to $700 in LE Bucks each month. The pretend money can be put in savings to collect interest or spent on candy, school supplies, cool toys, or gift cards to real stores in the Tri-Cities or online. In the past, students have won gift cards to Starbucks, iTunes, Apple, and Dick's Sporting Goods. Last year a student won a Star Wars Lego set and another won a flying remote control shark balloon. Students learn that positive behaviors and getting all work in on time pays off.
The fine folks at LearningEarnings do this for free because they value teachers who work really hard to deliver quality learning experiences. By sending the rewards system to my classroom, they make it possible for me to offer incentives to children rather than punishment. I can spend my own money on materials we need for learning content--or spend it on my own family from time to time. Students will be given a User Name and Password during the first week of school. If you have Internet at home, your student can go online and play games, invest LE bucks, learn to budget, or buy a Tootsie Pop!
Just click on the LE logo above!
Students love to shop and eat at local businesses. They also like to set goals and save large sums of LE bucks to purchase gift cards. If you would like to donate a gift card to the Learning Earnings program, please email me at [email protected] anytime. We will post a picture of the happy card winner on the class web page and give you a nice shout-out!

NEW! Text Reminders Service Available to Frogs ELA 7 Students, Parents, and Guardians
Students, parents, and guardians and can sign up for notifications by sending an email to the teacher's code (e.g. [email protected]). The medium you sign up with determines how you will receive notifications. So if a student signs up from his/her phone, he/she will receive text messages. Likewise, a parent who emails in will receive messages via email. You may sign up on all your portable devices and an active email account if you wish. Either way, you will receive text messages for the services you sign up for. I have decided to create an ELA 7 GENERAL text account for when I want to send students/parents reminders (school picture day, early dismissal reminders, reminders about whatever is important enough to text). There will also be a separate text service broken down by core. If you/your student is enrolled in Core 2 ELA 7, you want to enter the code for that text feed.
See the information sheet in your student's registration/orientation packet to get your codes. You can register by using your Smart device or by going to the sign up web page. If you need help, please email Mrs. P so she can help you stay connected with English class.

When we were reading about the Hindenburg, we talked about a fantastic website where anybody can get some great interactive history lessons.
I promised I would post the URL so people could visit anytime. Go to the homepage URL http://www.havefunwithhistory.com/index.html when you want to know something about history. To view the Hindenburg video clip we saw in class, use this URL: http://www.havefunwithhistory.com/HistorySubjects/hindenburg.html

Links to Sounds from Saturn and NASA Picture of the Day
We have been talking a lot about facts, truth, fiction, and nonfiction this week. We talked about not believing everything you hear and see in print and that the best way to get at the truth is to find proof that something is OR is not the truth. We talked a lot on Thursday, August 30 about science facts. We used to think Pluto was a planet, and then it wasn't. A few weeks ago, somebody discovered Pluto has a real moon that orbits around it, so it will soon (if not already) be re-declared a planet. We talked about wrapping your brain around the infinity of the universe, and eventually got around to the old saying (no longer fact) that there is no sound in space. Well, it just so happens I have some links that feed the sense of wonder we have experienced. There are radio frequency transmissions coming from Saturn that you can hear anytime; there is a video cam attached to the Mars rover that is presently functioning on Mars; and NASA sends me a picture a day that shows me something to do with space--with access to its archives! Students have asked me to share those links, so here they are, stargazers!
